Medical Emergency

ACTION REQUIRED BY STAFF TENDING TO Person

  1. If a student has an epinephrine auto-injector, determine its whereabouts and consult the Emergency Action Plan for that student.
  2. Administer the epinephrine auto-injector, immediately, being sure to grip the auto injector with a tight fist.
  3. May administer an epinephrine auto injector or other medication prescribed to the student for the treatment of an anaphylactic reaction, even if there is no pre-authorization to do so.
    Note: In some circumstances, a second dose may be required.
  4. CALL 911 for immediate transport to the hospital.

    Explain to 911 that the person is experiencing an anaphylactic reaction.
  5. Ensure that a responsible adult accompanies the student to the hospital and remains with the student until the parent/guardian arrives.
  6. Notify the parent/guardian or staff emergency contact of the medical emergency. State the name of the hospital they have been taken to for medical care.
